Professional development and support for teachers

Professional development for teachers through the FM Network

FMNetwork CPD

A key aim of the Further Mathematics Network is to contribute to the continuing professional development of mathematics teachers.
There is a range of training being offered by Further Mathematics Network Centres supported by the FMN Central team.

  • Some Centres collaborate with CPD provision offered by their local Universities.
  • In some Centres there will be courses aimed at specific post-16 units.
  • In the academic year 2007/08 we ran a successful pilot project to offer support to teachers using live on-line tutorials through Elluminate.
  • Many teachers have found that attending FMN revision days is an excellent way to gain an overview of an A level Mathematics or Further Mathematics module.
  • For details on CPD events being held by centres, please see below.

This page contains useful information and resources regarding professional development.

Remote professional development for teachers through the FM Network

FMNetwork RPD

Remote Professional development (RPD)using Elluminate

RPD courses are on-line, live and interactive. They are designed to enable teachers to teach A level Mathematics and A level Further Mathematics with confidence.

Teaching Further Mathematics (TFM)

Teaching Further Mathematics is aimed at teachers who want to improve their subject knowledge or become familiar with the content of some of the new Further Mathematics units. During the course participants study the content of Further Maths from a teaching and learning perspective.

The emphasis will be on expanding the participants' mathematical horizons and giving them a deeper understanding of the links within mathematics.

The course is studied over a year and covers the Pure Mathematics content of all four English A level Further Mathematics examination specifications. There is no expectation that participants will be teaching any of these modules during the course.

Participants will receive website and email support from the module tutor.

For more information please see: http://www.fmnetwork.org.uk/teacher_area/tfm.php

MEI 2-day Professional Development courses

These courses are designed for teachers who want to widen their expertise in an area of post-GCSE Mathematics. Each course is suitable for all examination specifications and consists of a pair of training days roughly six weeks apart, together with access to extensive on-line resources, a textbook and email support from the course tutor. The courses currently offered include:

  • An introduction to Decision Mathematics 1
  • An introduction to Mechanics 1
  • An introduction to Statistics 1
  • An introduction to AS Further Pure Mathematics 1
  • An introduction to OCR Additional Mathematics

For more information please see the MEI website: http://www.mei.org.uk/cpd/alevel.shtml

Resources for registered schools and colleges

Schools and colleges that register with the Further Mathematics Network receive a single username to access the online resources for AS/A2 applied mathematics and further pure mathematics units. The resources include teachers’ notes a range of interactive materials that can be used to support teaching and learning.

Many teachers have reported how useful they have found these resources are when teaching a unit for the first time, or to find new ideas for teaching units they are already familiar with.

For more information and details of the resources available see the resources area http://www.fmnetwork.org.uk/resources.php
